DESCRIPTION: Plants up to 150 cm tall, with numerous, erect, acutely 4-angled stems to 30 mm thick, forming dense groups, brownish-green to fawn coloured, with small, pointed, erect marginal teeth; flower-bearing portion of stems to 100 cm long, 3–4-angled, thin, sometimes 2(–5)-branched. Flowers in 2–5-flowered widely spaced clusters; pedicels c. 5 mm long. Corolla rotate with very short tube; lobes slender, dark purple with yellow transverse bands near their base, with dark purple, versatile hairs along margin. Corona short, dark purple; outer lobes erect, 2-fid; inner lobes incumbent on anthers.
